We begin our trip in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands. Board in the evening and enjoy a relaxing dinner while you meet the other guests and crew before we depart for the Russell Islands.
Our first stop is near Hai Island, home to White Beach. This site offers a diverse mix of WWII historical diving among trucks and jeeps, bulldozers and tractors that were all dumped when the Americans departed Solomon Islands following the war. Up in the shallows, there is an interesting display of macro life including twin spot gobies, a variety of pipefish, shrimp, crabs and other small crustaceans. In the evening, we can sometimes find mandarinfish hiding among the coral bommies.
We continue on to the western portion of the Russell Islands to the iconic Leru Cut and Mirror Pond where we will find cuts and chasms and amazing swim throughs. Another favourite site is Bat Cave with its resident colony of bats and a wall covered in life; home to a plethora of nudibranchs. We have spotted as many as 70 varieties on a single dive here.
As we cross over towards the Western Province, we come to Mary Island, one of the most amazing spots for schooling barracuda and trevally. When the current is running strong - we may also have the opportunity to see mantas.
At the entry to the Western Province, we find Mbulo Island and the small village of Peava. Mbulo has the healthiest and most diverse display of hard corals anywhere in the world. Among the coral, you'll find anemonefish, anthias and cuttlefish. At Peava, we will have the chance to meet some of the local carvers before we take a tour of the small elementary school and meet the community's children and their teachers. For those guests who have brought school supplies as part of our Pack for a Purpose program, we can make a donation to the school.
On the southern side of New Georgia Island, we stop in Helebar for a day of exploratory diving. At Wickham Harbour, we may find some unidentified Japanese wrecks from WWII. Another favourite is the wreck of the Taiyo, an upright fishing vessel that offers some amazing photography opportunities.
Finally, as we near Munda, we have over 40 dive sites to choose from. Perhaps we will dive the wall at Rendova, or Shark Point, or the Airacobra Plane. There are so many sites to choose from, you will surely want to add on a 3 day land based package with Dive Munda to continue to explore the many sites on offer. Let us know and we can help you organize your diving and accommodation and of course, your return flight to Honiara.
Along the way, we stop at some of the smaller islands and visit remote local villages. Come shop for produce for our meals or check out the local carvings. You might even be able to catch a game of football with the local village children!
